Man Attempts to Save a Dog Stranded on Ice, Then Goes Canoeing

Dylan Coqit first noticed the dog’s heartbreaking howls on the shores of Wood Lake in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley in Canada. Dylan was at his lakeside home when he heard desperate cries for help and noticed a dog that had fallen through the ice.

“It’s shrieking the whole time,” Cocqit explained. “It was heartbreaking to hear that poor puppy cry.”

Dylan made the decision to assist in the dog’s rescue. He grabbed a weight and dashed outside in his pyjamas, attempting to break a path through the ice.

But his next-door neighbor, Bill Varner, noticed and became concerned for the young man. Varner told CTV News, “That was my first thought when I saw him.” “I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God. If he goes out there, he might not make it.'”

Varner looked around for a safer option and came across a fiberglass canoe at a neighbor’s house. The two men jumped into the canoe and paddled out to the dog. Varner was able to rock back and forth in the canoe, breaking the ice, while Dylan steered the canoe alongside the dog.

They arrived at the border collie just in time before the dog collapsed from exhaustion.

Dylan called the dog’s owner, who was overjoyed that her dog had been saved. Dylan is grateful that he was in the right place at the right time.

Below is a short interview with the rescuers as well as clips from Dylan’s original video of the rescue.
