An old adage goes that you can’t truly understand another person’s experience until you’ve “walked a mile in their shoes.” In the case of the husband in the following story, he believes he is underappreciated and that his stay-at-home wife does not work as hard as he does. He wishes to teach her a lesson and begs God to allow him to swap places with her so she can experience what it’s like to work as hard as he does every day. So God grants him his wish, only for the husband to realize he is about to learn a lesson.
“A man was sick of going to work every day while his wife stayed at home.” He wanted her to understand what he was going through, so he prayed: ‘Dear Lord, I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife simply stays at home.’ I want her to understand what I’m going through. So, please let her body swap with mine for a day.’
“God granted the man’s wish in his infinite wisdom.” Sure enough, the man awoke the next morning as a woman… He got up, cooked breakfast for his friend, woke up the kids, laid out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners, stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put the groceries away, paid the bills, and balanced the check book. He cleaned the litter box for the cat and bathed the dog.
“It was already 1 p.m. at the time. And he rushed through making the beds, doing the laundry, vacuuming, dusting, and sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor. I dashed to the school to pick up the kids and had an argument with them on the way home. Set out milk and cookies and organized the kids to do their homework. Then she set up the ironing board and watched TV while he ironed.
“At 4:30 p.m., he started peeling potatoes and washing vegetables for salad, breading pork chops, and snapping fresh beans for supper.” He cleaned the kitchen after dinner, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9:00 p.m. He was exhausted and, despite the fact that his daily chores had not been completed, he went to bed where he was expected to make love, which he did without complaint.
“The next morning, he awoke and knelt by the bed, saying, ‘Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking.’ I was completely wrong to envy my wife’s ability to stay at home all day. Oh, please! Please allow us to trade back… Amen!’
“In his infinite wisdom, the Lord replied, ‘My son, I believe you have learned your lesson, and I will gladly return things to the way they were.’ However, you will have to wait nine months. ‘You became pregnant last night.'”
