Brave dog manages to pull a baby deer from the water

A dog on a beach in New York became a hero when he dove into the water and rescued a fawn that had darted out into the waves and couldn’t find its way back to shore.

Mark Freeley and his dogs Sara and Storm were walking on the beach in Port Jefferson when they came across a fawn that had gotten itself into some trouble.

“Storm just dove into the water, swam out to the fawn, grabbed it by the neck, and started swimming back to shore,” he told CBS New York.

The English golden retriever did his job and dutifully fetched the stranded baby, pulling it all the way onto the sand and protectively lying down next to it.

“And then he started nudging it and pulling it to make sure everything was okay,” Freeley explained.

The dog’s father called for help, but when the rescuers arrived, the poor thing had been scared back into the water, possibly by the dogs. “This time it went out even further,” Freeley said, so he and Frank Floridia of Strong Island Rescue waded out into the water together to save it.

For the eight minutes it took them to wrap a rope around the fawn and reel it in, tension filled the air. Floridia gives credit to his partner, Erica Kutzing, who ran a mile on the beach to assist with the rescue and carried the sick animal to their van.

The baby was covered in ticks and had an eye injury, but it is now being cared for by a local rescue group until it is healthy enough to return to the wild.
