After a year apart, a dog reunites with his mother just in time for the holidays.

A Pit Bull who went missing nearly a year ago was reunited with her family thanks to some good Samaritans who were determined to save her. Gracie, a six-year-old Pit Bull, ran away from her Chicago home after a visitor left the front door open by accident.

Kelly Shade, Gracie’s mother, cried for months and searched for her dog in vain.

“We posted signs everywhere; we posted on Lost Dog Illinois, we contacted all the shelters in the neighborhood, and I just cried for months,” she explained to ABC7 Chicago.

Shade had no idea, but two miles away, some neighbors noticed a dog wandering through their Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood during the summer. Gracie was too nervous to approach anyone. But that didn’t stop Polly Ellison from starting to feed Gracie. She gained Gracie’s trust over the next few months. Katie Campbell, a local rescuer, came to her aid. As soon as they had Gracie secured, they discovered a microchip and contacted Shade the same day.

“I just started crying all over again,” Shade said when she found out Gracie had been found.

When the two were reunited, Gracie’s tail began wagging furiously. Shade told the news outlet, “She just lost it and I lost it,” before adding, “Definitely a holiday miracle.”
