Toys were strewn throughout the hallways of the Bedford County H.u.m.a.n.e Society in Pennsylvania when staff arrived to open it. “Someone had a good night at the shelter,” and that someone was Gilligan.
Gilligan is the shelter’s official office greeter and a “l.i.f.e.r” who has lived there since he was a puppy in 2021. Because of his early childhood t.r.a.u.m.a, he has r.e.m.a.i.n.e.d at the shelter, where he is very happy. He was o.v.e.r.j.o.y.e.d one night last week when he was able to “pawty” and play with almost every toy at the shelter.

When it was time to close up shop for the night, one of the employees forgot to properly latch Gilligan’s kennel. Gilligan noticed, freed himself, and decided to have some fun, which included discovering the newly d.o.n.a.t.e.d pile of Christmas toys.
“He spent a long time checking to see if anyone was in the building,” Joyce Ross, an employee at Bedford County Humane Society, said of Gilligan’s antics to The Dodo. “Once he realized he was alone, he immediately went for the toys.” He took them out of the pile we had just received from all of our Christmas d.o.n.a.t.i.o.n.s, one by one, and brought them into the hallway to play with them and pull the squeakers out.”
Gilligan also didn’t limit himself to one room. He strewn toys all over the shelter, and staff discovered what remained of the toys strewn about. He cheerfully greeted staff the next morning by dancing and wagging his tail.
The shelter employees are all laughing about it, remarking that “it’s a good thing Gilligan was on patrol” because “something d.e.s.t.r.o.y.e.d all these toys sometime during the night.”
In addition, reviewing the s.u.r.v.e.i.l.l.a.n.c.e tapes revealed that Gilligan had literally partied all night! He began at 6:30 p.m….

Employees began the salvage operation soon after surveying the mess and observing Gilligan’s preference for toys with squeakers only. The food and toys without squeakers remained untouched.
“First, we went through all of the toys to see if there were any s.u.r.v.i.v.o.r.s that could be played with again,” Ross explained. “He spared most of the ones that didn’t have a squeaker because that’s what he was looking for.” The cleanup was relatively simple once we recovered some of the toys that could be reused.”
