A d.i.s.a.b.l.e.d boy takes his first steps, and his classmates cheer him on.

David Matos de Souza was born paralyzed as a result of Poliomyelitis, an infectious disease caused by a virus that attacks the spinal cord. Despite the fact that David has spent his entire life in a wheelchair, the 6-year-old Brazilian boy recently surprised and delighted his classmates by taking his first steps.

A teacher captured the incredible moment on video, in which David stands up and walks on his own. His classmates applaud and yell “Go, David, go!” as he walks across the room and into his teacher’s waiting arms. He, like everyone else in the room, is filled with pride and joy at his accomplishment.

A teacher captured the incredible moment on video, and when his mother saw it later, she was overcome with emotion.

“It was very emotional to watch the video. “I cried a lot,” David’s mother, Roseley, told a Brazilian television station. “Doctors said he’d never be able to walk because of his paralysis, but he’s recently been getting some physical therapy, and his classmates decided to try and encourage him to walk.”

“It’s indescribable how I feel now after so many years of adversity,” she added. “If there are other mothers in a similar situation, never give up on your children,” she says.
